The city of Gilbert, located in the southeast part of Arizona's Greater Phoenix area in what is generally referred to as the East Valley, is only about 20 miles from the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Gilbert is one of the fastest growing and safest communities in the nation, and it attracts many business guests, as well as those looking to enjoy some of the city's great opportunities.
Gilbert's history is rich. The city was named after William Gilbert, who provided the land to build the railway from Phoenix to Florence in 1902. Primarily an agricultural area, it was known as the "Hay Capital of the World," and it remained a farming town for years. It gradually transitioned into a young family-oriented affluent city, becoming known for its medical industry and hospitals. Today, Gilbert offers a high quality of life with an excellent education system and thriving business scene. The quaint small town of the old days is still evident down the main street, and while many housing estates dot the landscape, there are still some large custom homes with big front lawns, horse properties and agricultural areas to the east of the city.
